Denise Startin
Artist Installation Photography Print maker Mixed Media
Denise Startin is an artist, writer, researcher and collector. Working primarily with found objects and images her practice is curatorial in approach. To take a curatorial approach is also to ‘take care’ in the restoration, conservation and curation of minor histories, narratives, texts, images, archives and collections either discarded or forgotten. During this process a historical figure, site, place, event, voice or voices are adopted to activate the work and produce a narrative arc.
Central themes include history, memory, narrative and myth, a continually recurring relation is the passage of ephemera between public and private realms. Denise reimagines and restores these often personal decontextualised objects into new narratives and new performative relations, inventing new histories. She also explores these relations in critical and performance writing. Denise studied at the Royal College of Art and works across printmaking, photography and installation.
